The Importance of Building Habits

If you have signed up to the iNSPIRE app you would hopefully already be tracking your wellness by now. However, you may be wondering… why is this important? It’s hard to get motivated to do something or really put value to it if you don’t know why you are doing it. So here’s the importance of building habits explained, and why tracking your wellness can be simple once the groundwork is done.
Let’s think of it this way… Everyday you go to training, you track your laps, your skills or your fitness statistics. At competition you judge your performance based on how fast you were, the score you got or how much you won by, right? Everything is tracked and you use that to help you improve and to drive your training. It’s the same with your wellbeing health tracking. As you know sleep and nutrition can have a massive impact on the way you train and compete. I don’t know about you but if I don’t get enough sleep I become cranky, lethargic and find it hard to get motivated to do anything.
Why track your wellness?
Tracking your wellness is important for several reasons.
1. It helps you notice patterns in your mood and wellness. For example if you are sleeping consistently poor over the past few days or have been struggling with knee pain for over a week now it is probably time to seek some help with this.
2. It will help you to understand how your physical and mental wellness can affect your performance. For example, if you have a bad night’s sleep one day and train poorly the next day it is important to understand that your lack of sleep may have contributed to that, rather than stressing that you are not performing well. Being able to link the two together will help you to understand how training and life influence each other on a daily basis.
3. It is going to keep you accountable! Of course this is only true if you tracking honestly and regularly. If you’ve ever worn a fitness band you might understand the challenge of trying to beat your step count each day. Similarly you can challenge yourself to get a certain amount of sleep or track a specific number of healthy meals each week.
4. Wellness tracking on the iNSPIRE sport app is an easy way to start those difficult conversations with your coach over mood, fatigue or general pain. If you are worried or have concerns about bringing stuff up with them face to face, tracking this data can give them an indication on how you are travelling and help initiate the conversation about what you may need to resolve this issue.
For Wellness Tracking to be effective, it must stem from habits being built – that’s the key! Don’t forget every time you track on the app you’ll earn iNSPIRE points that will towards the leaderboard challenge for a chance to win awesome prizes. Now If that isn’t a great incentive to keep tracking then I don’t know what is!
